Center Plaza is a 9-story brick, concrete and steel mixed-use building located in Boston across from City Hall Plaza. It was originally built between 1965 and 1969. The ground floor contains retail space and a pedestrian arcade at the front while the other floors are office and rental spaces. The building is comprised of three components, all interconnected, One, Two, and Three Center Plaza.

CBT was tasked with breathing new life into the old buildings and bringing the community together through rejuvenating the public spaces and ground floor.

Challenge
When CBT started to reimagine the mezzanine floors, they knew they wanted to use gauged porcelain tile over the existing terrazzo floors. Gauged porcelain tile is a great option for a demo-free application, but it is crucial to be detailed in the specification process, so the installation is executed correctly. For instance, the installation team needs advanced certifications and require specific setting materials and tools. After finding the right product, the next step was to write the specification of materials properly.

Solution
CBT relied upon Creative Materials to help source a product that would not just meet their design vision but could also be installed over the terrazzo floor. Using our consultative approach we were able to offer several suggestions to fit CBT’s design concept. Once the product was selected, CBT worked with our Quality Assurance & Technical (QA&T) Team
to write the specification for a gauged tile product, guaranteeing a successful installation both in the short and long term.

Result
By working with Creative Materials Corporation, CBT Architects were not only able to find the right product to meet their needs, but they also ensured the specification was written in compliance ANSI A108.19 standards.

Key Project Outcomes:
• Sourced products to meet desired design aesthetic
• Successfully applied gauged tile over terrazzo floors
