Tally

Tally by Michael Anastassiades, manufactured by Mutina, transforms the traditional terracotta brick into a contemporary architectural element that explores pattern, light, and spatial rhythm. Created by extruding a square divided into longitudinal sections, the collection reimagines Mutina’s original Fringe concept as a three-dimensional building component. The result is an artisanal terracotta brick system that blurs the line between architecture, surface design, and sculptural installation.

Inspired by the visual language of tally marks, the collection introduces a modular approach to composition where each element becomes part of a larger architectural expression. Two complementary brick profiles, Wide and Narrow, can be installed horizontally, vertically, or combined to create an endless range of patterns. The consistent spacing and thoughtful geometry allow walls and partitions to develop a rhythmic quality that feels both structured and organic.

As light moves throughout the day, Tally reveals a constantly changing relationship between solid form and open space. The varying density of each brick creates shifting levels of transparency, allowing light to filter through while introducing depth, shadow, and visual movement. From one perspective, the structure appears open and permeable. From another, the negative space nearly disappears, creating a more solid architectural presence. This dynamic interaction makes Tally a distinctive solution for projects in which materiality is an integral part of the overall design experience.
